Essential questions

Lesson one: Geography Review

Earth is……..

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Our Earth is divided by geographers into:

Continents and Oceans

Earth is also divided into four:

Hemispheres

What is a hemisphere?

Is a half of a globe

Two imaginary lines are used to create these hemispheres…what are these lines?

Equator and the prime meridian

Equator is…..?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Prime meridian is….?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Imaginary lines help us :

Find where places are located

Lesson two: Lines of latitude and longitude

How can we describe where a point is on Earth's surface?

By standard geographic lines called latitude and longitude

Lines of latitude measure ……..

The distance north or south of the equator

Lines of longitude measure ……..

The distance east or west of the prime meridian

These lines all converge and meet at ……..

North and south poles

Lesson three: Parts of a Map

A globe is……….?

Is a round ball that represents Earth

A map is …….?

A flat drawing of all or part of the Earth's surface

What maps show?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

What are the parts of a map?

Map title: tells you what the map is

compass rose: is the drawing showing East, West, North and South directions on a map

map key: is a box that tells what the symbols on the ma stand for

Unit 2: lesson one: Earth's Materials

What are the earth's materials?

Air, Water, Rocks, Soil

Soil is………

Soil is the top layer of the Earth's surface.

Soil is made up of……….

Rocks, dead leaves, and roots. It also water and air.

Organisms are……

Things living in the soil

Do soils come in different colors?

Soil can come in black, red, yellow, white, brown, and gray

How does water stay in the soil?

It pours into pores

How does air get into soil? By same pores that let in and hold water

What is rock?

rock is a solid mass of geological materials.

Rocks come in different sizes, shapes and colors.

Rocks can be hard or soft, as large as a mountain or as small as a grain of salt.

What is water?

Is one of the basic earth's materials that living things need

What is air?

Is  essential materials that living things need to breath and live.

Lesson two: earth's layers

What are the four main layers of Earth ?

- crust

- mantle

- outer core

- inner core

ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ

Lesson three: t=The Earth System

The area near the earth's surface can be divided up into four spheres:

- lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere

Lithosphere:

The lithosphere is the rocky outer part of the Earth. It is made up of the brittle crust and the top part of the upper mantle. The lithosphere is the coolest and most rigid part of the Earth

Hydrosphere:

is the total amount of water on a planet. The hydrosphere includes water that is on the surface of the planet, underground, and in the air. A planet's hydrosphere can be liquid, vapor, or ice. On Earth, liquid water exists on the surface in the form of oceans, lakes and rivers.

Biosphere:

Relatively thin life-supporting stratum of Earth's surface, extending from a few kilometers into the atmosphere to the deep-sea vents of the ocean. The biosphere is a global ecosystem composed of living organisms (biota) and the a biotic (nonliving) factors from which they derive energy and nutrients.

Atmosphere:

The atmosphere of Earth, commonly known as air, is the layer of gases retained by Earth's gravity that surrounds the planet and forms its planetary

Lesson four: The Water Cycle

The steps of the water cycle are….

- Evaporation

- Condensation

- Precipitation

- Collection

 Unit 3: communities

A community is a group of people live in the same place, work, and help each other.

What makes a community?

……………………………………………………………………………………………

What are the three types of valleys?

V – shaped valleys

U – shaped valleys

Flat – floored valleys

Landforms: are defined as the natural physical features found on the Earth's surface.

ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ

Lesson two: Islands

An island is a piece of land surrounded by water on all sides.
