Sudan in the Stone Ages

Sudan in the Paleolithic era

The archaeological research that took place in different parts of Sudan agrees that the oldest stone civilizations of Sudan, being people of the Negro race, are of a different type than the current type.

All that could be collected from the total of the excavations consisted of different types of stone machines, collected from the area between the Sixth Cataract and up to the borders of the countries of Egypt in the north

The clearest of these stone remnants was the weapon known as the hand axe, which is an oval piece of flint, pointed at the lower end, serrated and with a cutting edge..

There are two important Paleolithic sites in Sudan:

Khor Abu Anja, Omdurman, and Singa area on the Blue Nile, where a human head known as a Singa man was found.

Small quantities of stone tools dating back to this era were also found in Khor Abu Anja.

Sudan in the Middle Stone Age

Traces of this era were found in the place north of the railway station in Khartoum.

It is mentioned that the ancient man was widespread in that region, and they used spears for hunting, both land and sea. They also used the hook, the stick, the arrows, the bows and the various sticks of stones.

All this indicates the spread of predators around the Blue Nile and the White Nile in that era. They did not know agriculture or minerals, but they knew the pottery industry.

And they were corrugating their pottery with the backbone of the fish ,that is called (Gargoor), and it was known as the corrugated pottery industry.

Sudan in the Neolithic Age

Antiquities were found in the present-day Al-Shehinab area, dating back to this era, which is located on the western bank of the Nile, about 48 km north of Omdurman. The people of this region made many beautiful, shiny and polished pottery products, and painted some decorative shapes on them, such as triangles, equal lines, and others.

Al-Shehinab area was famous for making beads and ivory, and it was also famous for being one of the oldest civilizations in making elaborate pottery.
