Man and metal
The history of civilization is linked to
minerals, where man took a great step with the discovery of every new mineral
and his capabilities to overcome difficulties in life increased when he was
able to bend and form minerals
Common metals
Iron, copper, and aluminium are among the most
widely distributed metals
Alloy
Alloy: It is a mixture of two or more metals
For example
Bronze is a mixture of copper and tin
Steel: It is a mixture of iron and carbon
Metal properties:
Metals differ from each other in many
properties, but they share common properties such as
Power
Luminosity and darkness
Tensile strength
Good conductivity of heat and electricity
Metal uses
Iron:
The most widely used metal; the Nubians used it
in ancient Meroe 2600 years ago and is used in the manufacture of things from
needles and razors to ships, cars, locomotives and construction works
Aluminium is the second most widely used metal and is used in the manufacture of
aircraft and electrical wires. It is also used in buildings, windows, doors and
cooking utensils
Copper
It is widely used
because of its flexibility, corrosion resistance and ductility. It is used for
the manufacture of thin wires, and because it is the best conductor of
electricity after silver. It is widely used in electrical industries.
